Mayor wants to get us running

Thursday, September 06, 2018

West Midland mayor, Andy Street wants more active communities and will be running at the Boldmere Bullets Run this Sunday (9th September).

The mayor congratulated Run Birmingham on helping over 7,000th people start running since 2015.  He was visiting the Run Birmingham group which meets at Castle Vale Stadium.

Run Birmingham groups offer free support for runners of all abilities and are specialists in helping people take their first steps.

“I’ll do whatever I can to get our communities more active so Run Birmingham has my whole-hearted support,” said Andy Street.

“It’s not about just getting fitter, it’s also about having fun, making new friends and socialising.  People who run together have fun together.  Exercise can improve your quality of life. I’m so impressed with what Run Birmingham’s already achieved. Really well done!”

Councillor for Castle Vale - Suzanne Webb – set up the visit.

“I’ve been part of this group from the start and I’ve been a regular ever since” said Suzanne, “so it’s great that Andy’s lending his weight to our cause now.”

Run Birmingham leader at Castle Vale is Sally Bynoe who also leads groups in Shard End, Kingshurst and Chelmsley Wood.

“We meet at the stadium but we use it as a launch pad to run all around Castle Vale. There’s lots of green space in the area to enjoy and we have a wide range of people taking part.”

Ian Mackenzie, project lead at Run Birmingham said, “Running can make a powerful difference to a person and a community. We were given 3 years funding to get 5,000 people involved so I’m thrilled we’ve exceeded that. Not only that, but Run Birmingham is here to stay. We’re now part of The Active Wellbeing Society and look forward to joining their mission to get local people more active. ”
