Volunteer leaders are keeping the city running

Friday, June 01, 2018

This week Run Birmingham are celebrating Volunteers’ Week by recognising the run leaders who are helping get people active.

Volunteers Week takes place 1-7 June every year and raises awareness of the importance of benefits of volunteering.

This year’s theme is “Volunteering for All”, celebrating volunteers from all communities and walks of life, carrying out a diverse range of roles.

At Run Birmingham our volunteer run leaders come from all parts of the city with different backgrounds and abilities. However they all have one thing in common - the passion to help others.

Many of our run leaders first started running at one of our groups. They completed one our couch to 5k sessions and went on to be trained as run leaders by England Athletics.

They’re trained in health and safety, how to support beginners and how to plan suitable routes. They also look after the warm ups and stretches that help people get the best from their running.

Ian Mackenzie Run Birmingham project manager said ‘It’s great to see we grew so many of our own volunteer leaders. People who can really relate to what new runners are going through because they’ve been there themselves. We’ve also welcomed aboard a number of club runners who are great ambassadors for running and want to get their own communities active.’

If you are interested in volunteering or setting up a group in your community we can help you! We can provide the training you need and support from one of our activator team as well as helping you get the word out about what you’re doing.

Here’s a big shout out to our volunteer run leaders. Day in day out, they motivate inspire and support.
